What does SOHMA stand for?
SOHMA stands for School of Healing Martial Arts. Since its beginning, SOHMA integrative Health Center has been committed to combining ancient wisdom of eastern medicine with modern health practices and martial arts. This integrated approach is analogous to the interrelationship between Yin (healing energy) and Yang (martial energy). The Yin branch of our center is the SOHMA integrative health clinic which provides: Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Eastern Medicine, and Herbal Pharmacy. The yang branch is the School of Healing Martial Arts where we use healing aspects of Tai Chi Chuan and martial arts for rehabilitation, self-discipline, and harmony. We don’t just teach about these healing arts, we also provide them.
Do you work with other health care providers?
Yes, we do. In fact, we think it’s very important to co-manage patients with other health care providers. We strongly believe in patient centered care and we are a part of the patient’s team.
Do you accept personal injury cases?
Yes. For personal injury cases, we can work with your claims adjuster or accept an attorney’s lien. We provide x-rays in house and have experience providing all necessary paperwork. We’ll begin with a consultation, examination, x-rays (if necessary), and discussion of payment.
When working with an attorney, we will prepare paperwork to send to your attorney and no payment will be required upfront. Rather, we will collect upon settlement of your case.
When working with an insurance claims agent, we will call to verify medical payment on your insurance plan and/or the plan of the responsible party. Once verified, we can begin treatment and hold off on collecting until after resolution of your care and your case.
Do you accept workers compensation cases?
For workers compensation, we suggest you speak with your primary treating physician or claims agent to see if our office can provide you with treatment.
Alternatively, we can schedule you for a consultation at $100 which will include a consultation, examination, x-rays (if necessary), and a verification of your workers compensation status. We can also connect you with local works compensation lawyers that can help you with your case.
How do I get started?
Contact us today at (562) 420-2112 to schedule a consultation with our providers.
What can I expect on a first visit?
Consultations are provided at a cost of $100 and includes a consultation, examination, x-rays (if necessary), and insurance verification. We generally do not treat on the first visit and treatments are rendered at our provider’s discretion. (Note: if you are looking to receive acupuncture treatment only, then the $100 fee includes the consultation and examination, as well as your first acupuncture treatment but no x-rays).
Consultation times can vary, but generally range from 20 to 45 minutes. When you arrive, our front desk staff will assist you in completing intake forms and will scan a copy of your driver’s license and insurance card to check for coverage (as applicable). You will then receive one-on-one time with our healthcare provider(s) to identify your wellness concerns and determine your specific health needs. If x-rays are needed, we will provide you with same-day x-rays at our facility and schedule a follow up consultation.
During the follow-up visit, our providers will go over their Report of Findings and proposed treatment plan, as well as your out-of-pocket costs. Once all options are presented, we will only move forward with your express permission. (Note: your $100 consult fee includes your Report of Findings visit and we will inform of additional costs prior to moving forward with your treatment.)
Is your facility handicapped accessible?
Yes. Our center has a side entrance that is accessible by wheelchair. There is handicap parking to the west of our building, next to Rocket Science Hair Salon. There is also a handicap ramp with handrails located at the viking way entrance to the building.
Do you sell supplements and herbs?
Yes, we offer an array of nutritional supplements ranging from nutritional supplements and cleansing aids to anti inflammatory CBD oil and immune enhancing mushrooms. We also offer topical pain relievers. We also customize both Eastern and Western herbal formulas for each individual’s needs. We offer herbal consultations with our Master Herbalist and Doctor at a modest fee. At your herbal consultation we’ll be able to determine three things: (1) What are possible causes of your chief complaint? (2) What herbs can help you with the cause and symptoms of your complaint naturally? (3) Provide useful tips on how to find and prepare these herbs at home.
If you do not have a major complaint, we will be able to discuss ways to promote optimal wellness, to increase quality of life, and to support longevity with herbs. Feel free to schedule your herbal consultation now by calling us at 562-420-2112.
Does SOHMA treat children?
Yes. We offer services to people of all ages. Often children actually respond more quickly than adults. All of our services are safe and modified when appropriate for children. If your child has an aversion to needles, don’t worry because we rarely use them on children. Frequently, our acupuncturists may massage the acupuncture points while showing the child’s parent/guardian how to locate and use them at home. This is called acupressure.
What do you charge for visits?
At SOHMA, we are committed to patient-centered care, and work hard to provide options that are within our patients’ budgets. Pricing depends on what services are indicated for our patients, as well as the frequency of visits recommended by the doctor.
Do you accept health insurance?
Yes. We accepts a variety of insurance plans and do our best to work with patients to utilize their insurance. Since each plan and patient is different, we suggest that patients bring their insurance card with them to their first visit, and we’ll work with our experienced biller to figure out how to best maximize your coverage.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept checks, cash, and most major credit cards, including Care Credit. We are also happy to work with you if you’d like to use a Healthcare Savings Account. Each HSA is different, but we will assist you to the best of our ability.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy. An acupuncturist will lace fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. This activates the body’s Qi (pronounced “chee”) and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and physical and emotional health. It can also improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.
How safe is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all natural, drug free therapy, yielding no negative side effects, just feelings of relaxation and well-being. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used once and then discarded.

What is fire cupping?
Fire cupping is one of the oldest and most effective methods of releasing toxins from the body’s tissues and organs. Cupping is the practice of applying a partial vacuum by means of heat or suction in one or several bell-shaped vessels (suction cups) to parts of the skin. This causes the tissues beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell increasing blood flow to the affected area. This enhanced blood flow under the cup draws impurities and toxins away from the nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination. Fire cupping is a safe, non-invasive and inexpensive technique. It is used to alleviate the pain and discomfort arising from disorders of the lungs and other internal organs, muscle spasms, joint pains, and numerous other conditions.
